Inspiring the next generation of global citizens

Richard Dickson, Mattel’s President and Chief Operating Officer describes the global thinking behind a new collaboration between Thomas & Friends and the United Nations

Parents often tell me they seek out Mattel brands not simply because ours are more fun, but because of the meaningful play our brands inspire – play that is active, imaginative and empowering. That means a lot to me because creating and nurturing brands that occupy an important place in the hearts and minds of parents and their children has been at the core of Mattel right from the start.

At Mattel, we believe that a great kids’ brand is one that fills a distinctive need, inspires a world of stories for kids to play, and connects to a bigger purpose.

By incorporating Sustainable Development Goals like gender equality, responsible consumption, and quality education  to name a few  into new Thomas & Friends adventures, our content will drive awareness of these critical issues, engaging children from an early age.

That’s why Thomas recently formed a new friendship that may be his most important yet. In an unprecedented collaboration for a pre-school brand, Thomas has joined with the world’s pre-eminent force for cooperation, the United Nations. Both share a mission to improve the world for the next generation. And by incorporating Sustainable Development Goals like gender equality, responsible consumption, and quality education — to name a few — into new Thomas & Friends adventures, our content will drive awareness of these critical issues, engaging children from an early age.

Mattel may be in the entertainment and play business, but what makes a Mattel brand special is its uniquely meaningful purpose and the developmental values the brand inspires. Whether it is a doll that encourages girls to reach their limitless potential or a little blue train that believes empathy and cooperation can change the world, we at Mattel believe that the ultimate value of play is inspiring the next generation of creative thinkers to imagine a better world.
